The Leadership Series 2025 with Zara Harrington

We had the opportunity to speak with Zara Harrington, a visionary leader in education, who shared her perspectives on life in the UAE, guidance for new teachers and leaders, and the ethos shaping BC International School & Nursery going forward.
With the new academic year approaching, what advice would you give to new teachers arriving to the UAE?
Logistically as soon as you arrive get a local phone number as everything is done via WhatsApp! Moving abroad is always tricky, stay connected to those around you as they will become your ‘Dubai family’. Always make the effort to explore and try new things such as hiking in the mountains or a walk along the beach. Dubai is more than just brunches, make sure you experience it all.
Professionally, always stick to your core values. The education landscape has a lot to offer. Be realistic about what your experience is and what you can do. Listen to those around you and never feed into toxic negativity in the work environment. Dubai is village like and everyone will know someone that knows you. Always keep that professional integrity.
Can you give us a sense of what life is like as an expat in the UAE?
It is magical. Many ‘pinch yourself’ moments and the convenience of everything soon spoils you. Your friends become your family and you get to meet so many cool people. Make the most of everyday.
How do you foster a sense of community within the schools you have led?
Nothing beats genuine connection. Taking the time to ensure everyone feels seen and heard makes the community a enjoyable place to work.
How does your school support teacher wellbeing and work-life balance, especially for those new to the region?
We take the time to get to know individuals. Work-life balance is subjective and personal to individuals. We just ensure that we align with people who share our core values. We are a community of professionals and want to ensure that everyone helps one another.
Tell us a little about BC International School and Nursery, and their vision for the coming years?
Our vision at BC is to create an environment where everyone flourishes. We are creating a school with a genuine culture and connection. Our aim is to look and feel different to every other school.
How many years have you been in leadership? What is your leadership style?
I have just completed 13 years as a Principal. Not sure I have a specific style but I do like to create teams and communities and enjoy each day. I never want someone in my school to have the Sunday dreads!
What do you look for when hiring new teachers and/or leaders?
Above everything, it is about a ‘can do’ attitude. Everything else can be taught but the right attitude cannot.
What are your views on incorporating and developing the use of AI within the classroom?
Is it an essential part of school development and growth moving forward? The world is moving at a rapid rate. Knowledge about AI and the skills needed for students for the future is vital. Whether schools embrace the change or not, is an individual journey, however at BC, we are all about preparing for the future and that includes technology – but nothing can replace a teacher!
Any personal motto or philosophy that you live by?
Not sure there is one motto for me. It depends on what is being done or needed to be focused on. A personal favourite is an old classic from Mary Poppins: ‘In every job that must be done, is an element of fun.‘
