The Leadership Series 2025 with Dr Naira Hamdy

Ralph Recruitment connected with Dr. Naira Hamdy, an experienced UAE school leader, who discussed her views on life in the Emirates, offered guidance for educators, and outlined the vision guiding Emirates National Schools.
With the new academic year here, what advice would you give to new teachers arriving in the UAE for the first time?
Having been in Dubai since 2011, my advice is to embrace the rich cultural diversity and international perspective that defines education here. Professionally, come prepared to engage with a wide range of learning styles and backgrounds. Draw upon your training in curriculum design and workshop leadership, as you may be called upon to mentor others. Personally, take time to explore the UAE, connect with fellow expats, and find opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture.
Can you give us a sense of what life is like as an expat in the UAE?
Life as an expat in the UAE is a unique blend of tradition and modernity. It offers incredible opportunities for professional growth and personal enrichment. As someone with extensive experience in the region, I can attest to the fact that building strong relationships, both professionally and personally, is key to a fulfilling experience.
How do you foster a sense of community within the schools you have led?
Drawing upon my experience as a Principal at Emirates National Schools and Dar al Marefa Private IB School, I foster a sense of community by promoting collaboration, creating shared goals, and recognizing individual contributions. I use my expertise in educational leadership to empower teachers, support their professional development, and cultivate a culture of inclusivity. Regular team-building activities, open communication channels, and opportunities for staff to share ideas also contribute to a strong sense of belonging.
How does your school support teacher wellbeing and work-life balance, especially for those new to the region?
At Emirates National Schools, we prioritize teacher wellbeing by offering mentorship programs, flexible planning time, and access to resources for mental and physical health. We recognize that adapting to a new environment can be challenging, especially for those new to the region, so we provide extra support through peer networks, cultural orientation programs, and opportunities for social engagement.
Tell us a little about your school and its vision for the coming years?
Emirates National Schools is committed to fostering lifelong learners who are globally minded and academically exceptional. Our vision for the coming years is to deepen our implementation of the IB philosophy, further integrate technology into our curriculum, and expand our outreach to the wider community. With my background in curriculum design and program evaluation, I am excited to lead our school toward these goals.
How many years have you been in leadership? What is your leadership style?
With over 24 years in education and extensive experience in leadership roles, I bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to my work. My leadership style is collaborative, empowering, and data-driven. I believe in fostering open communication, encouraging innovation, and making decisions based on evidence.
What do you look for when hiring new teachers and/or leaders?
I look for candidates who demonstrate a passion for education, a commitment to student success, and a growth mindset. Strong communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and a willingness to collaborate are also essential. As someone with a background in educational consultancy, I value candidates who can think critically, solve problems creatively, and contribute to our school’s overall mission.
What are your views on incorporating and developing the use of AI within the classroom? Is it an essential part of school development and growth moving forward?
AI has the potential to revolutionize education by personalizing learning, streamlining administrative tasks, and providing valuable insights into student progress. I believe that schools must embrace AI strategically and ethically, ensuring that it complements, rather than replaces, the human element of teaching.
Any personal motto or philosophy that you live by?
“Inspire, empower, and lead with integrity.” I believe that education is about more than just academics—it’s about nurturing the whole child, fostering their passions, and empowering them to make a positive impact on the world.
